Did you know Niger is the world’s fourth-largest exporter of uranium? What does this mean for security in the Sahel?

Despite its raw material wealth,  Niger remains one of the poorest developing countries according to the United Nations Human Development Index (UNHDI). It is worth noting that Niger’s Uranium, taped from Arlit and Akoka mines near the border with Mali (located in the Tuareg county), provides 20% of the fuel for France’s 58 nuclear reactors which generate 75% of France’s electricity (Mark Langan 2018: 157). It underscores the region’s significance to Frances’s energy and security needs. Could the roots of the Malian crises and intervention by French forces be traced to Uranium mines in Niger?
